Aurora going green in mosquito abatement

Last year, 30 of the state’s 102 counties were found to have a West Nile-positive bird, mosquito, horse or human case. A total of 61 human cases of West Nile disease were reported in Illinois last year.

AURORA — Spring rains could make conditions ripe for mosquitoes in the coming weeks, but the city of Aurora is tackling the mosquito population a new way this year — by going green.

The city’s Street Maintenance Division will be placing 12,000 Natular tablets into catch basins and other large sources of standing water that will last up to 180 days, according to a city press release.

The tablets, which are a certified-organic product that mosquito larvae feed upon, will prevent the insects from growing into adults.
